Knitting Champion of the World?

There was a message in my mail box... Posted on Friday, I just read it.

"Have you got what it takes to be Knitting Champion of the World?
Yarnmonkey launches the latest global knitting battle!"
M
ore info here: - http://www.yarn-monkey.blogspot.com/
"

It should take a couple of months, March and April. Of course I joined. *sigh* I know, I'm mad, stupid, and everything else, but, come on now, I CAN NOT resist a temptation like that LOL

No, I don't expect to win, but I think it will be fun. The Sock War was great :-)

Dogs do play with yarn...

Dogs play with yarn. Here's the photo evidence. He had the yarn THREE TIMES around his neck, and once around back legs, and it was also twisted around a chair on the right of me from where I stood taking the picture. It took me about an hour to clear the mess.
Oh, and about the mess... I didn't realize how messy my home is before taking this picture. I told my hubby that I can't possible EVER publish this photo, but he said that it's a good photo, and I'm a good person, even though my home looks like a garbage pit. Well, that mess is cleaned up as well. But I'm still ashamed.
But as my hubby says, if anyone judges me by the cleanliness of my home, it's THEIR problem, not mine. But I think it's my problem. It's *me* living here, not they. Anyway... I took the picture without noticing how messy it is, and it's just a good picture. Of dog playing with yarn.
Funny enough not one of our cats played with yarnballs like this. And one of them was totally cord crazy. Couldn't see a yarn, thread or cord without jumping on it. Except my crafts.

(Edited 22.1.
Now it's official... I'm stupid honest.

If your house is really a mess and a stranger comes to the door,
greet them with, "who could have done this? We have no enemies."

The other picture is of my peacock socks. The pattern will be at Socknitters' sock challenge book, which is going to be free on-line. So, keep your eyes open, I suppose the book will come out this year.

So many rods in the fire...

I really need to get the socks on the paper, better than just this:

and this is what I am doing... crocheting tulips for no reason what so ever... Isn't it interesting how the mind works? "Now I'm going to write down a couple of sock patterns, and then it's done". An hour later you sit there with a nice pattern, that would look nice as a little girl's spring jacket. You can make the leaves in green, and the rest in what ever color you want. For example, have the background in light blue and flower line in pink... Oh so cute!
Or you could make a square in an aran crochet afghan. It's rather easy pattern, and I can think of many uses :-) And I can think of many different applications ;-)

Uh. Back to socks.

Er... are you sure you wouldn't rather have a new washcloth pattern? *she asks hopefully*

12 Days of Yule dishcloths

Now I have posted all the instructions to the 12 dishcloths :-)
Partridge in a pear tree
two turtledoves
three French hens
four calling birds

five golden rings
six geese a-laying
seven swans a-swimming

eight maidens milking
nine ladies dancing
ten lords a-leaping

eleven pipers piping
twelve drummers drumming

Someone said that she's knitting an afghan with these squares for her favorite aunt as Christmas present :-) I'm very flattered and glad about that :-) I hope her aunt will like it :-) (Well... I like anything my niece gives to me, especially when she has made it herself, so I think she will... but I'm nevertheless very flattered, delighted and humble about my design being accepted by a niece *blush* :-))

Have fun :-)

Edited 30th of July:
THERE HAS BEEN SOME ERRORS IN THE PATTERNS!

I am currently going through these, and have found two errors in French Hens and one in Calling Birds - these have been corrected in the pattern.
As far as I can see the four first patterns are clean now, but if you spot other errors there, please inform me :-)

Hugs,
Ket

Edited 31st of July 2007
Rings, Geese and swans are clear now... I HOPE!!!

Edited 2nd of August (Happy Lammas, everyone :-))
Milking Maiden cleared - what a mess a single counting error can cause!

Edited 8th of September 2008
Pipers piping - row 18 had P3, should have had P4
Ladies dancing - rows 30 and 48 - row 30 was K13, should be K11 - row 48 had K1P and it should be K10 :-)
I will knit these too to be sure :-)

I need a needle case

I was looking for some ideas, when I stumbled over Shantti designs once again... I love her embroidery cases, bags, purses and what ever. I love her love of embroidery and stumpwork. *sigh* I wish I did something like that...

I want my needle case to be something spectacular, wonderful, beautiful, amazing, lovely... something that fills me with pride and pleasure every time I use it.
But it has to be practical as well. I need to have my crochet hooks, knitting needles and other crafting tools easily available, but in a reasonable small and handy case, so that I will use it. I suppose it will be something like a book or briefcase.

I love the boxes that fold out, but that would be a little unpractical for my purposes... It would be fun, but I can't - and don't want to - flip it over when I'm crafting. I'm very pleased with my little basket, that I can move easily with me, but it's such a mess!

I don't know if you can see, but there's a sheep mascot on the right, and a pin cushion I made in school when I was about 15, and that has a sheep as well. And it's pink... the "French Market Bag" which was a total failure :-( It became a perfect lining in the old basket with a broken handle, and fixed the basket became a perfect craft basket for me :-)
So perhaps I should go for sheep...
This is an Elizabeth Austen Needle Bag, and I like the idea - I just don't like the fabric. I saw a lovely one made of old kimono silk...

This one is much prettier, from Morehouse Farms, by Katharyn Crippen Shapiro

Here's a discussion about needle cases in "Knitter's Review Forum"
Here's how to make a hardcover circular needle case
Organized Knitter has a lot of pretty and fun cases
Hillscape has nice ones too :-)
This one is wonderful :-) By Annie :-)
Lantern Moon's silk needle cases are lovely too :-)

Knots

I was moderately interested in macrame, because everything I ever saw was made of string, cords and rope and thus pretty rough and coarse and rude and plain.

Then I saw some Margarethe lace. Margarethe lace is named after Margarethe Neumann in Germany in the beginning of 20th century, and they are very nice.
(The picture is a scanning from a book depicting Margarethe lace. I haven't managed to find any more information about it.)

Here's some Transylvanian macrame lace tablecloths and doilies. Look at the details.

I haven't thought of that the roughness and plainness is due to the thickness of strings, not due to the technique... One can knot just as intrigate and beautiful fine laces with lace thread in macrame technique as in any other technique. It really isn't only boring belts, bags, chairs and flower pot hangers.

Another style of knotting, similar to macrame is the Chinese knotting.
Here's a couple of sites about that:
http://www.chineseknotting.org/
http://co.middlesex.nj.us/culturalheritage/chineseknotting/index.html
http://photo.163.com/photos/jiaqyz/72883709/
http://photo.163.com/photos/cwj3348/43425628/
http://photo.163.com/photos/qiuhong558.com/104764627
They use silky cords and make all kinds of forms and tassels. Really fascinating :-)

The there's the Japanese Mizuhiki, which is also similar, but there the cord is paper, which gives a totally different air to the knottings. Mizuhiki artists are equally skillful and can create all kinds of forms with simple knots on a cord.
http://www.026.co.jp/mizuhiki/englishindex.html

Hamamusubi, the flower knotting, is another Japanese cord knotting, this time with silk cords.

Then there's braiding, platting, cordmaking, kumihimo; making cords, plaids, twines, lucet braiding...

Passementerie; the art of cording, knotting and tasseling.

2007 projects

So much to do, so little time...

It's only week 3 and I'm already behind in the timetable... It's totally impossible for me to have time to do everything I want to do - especially when I keep surfing online most of the time ;-)

(Especially when I just get more ideas to do... :-()

I have been planning on a puppet theater to my nieces and nephews since the first of them was born - and that was almost 18 years ago. I doubt he's interested anymore :-D

I have promised to knit a sweater to my hubby, and though he's a nice man and waits patiently, I don't want to keep him waiting for so long. I have told him that he's probably going to have it for next winter, but... *sigh* Yes, I'm a bad person. (Not really, I just feel like it.)

There's so much to do and so little time... So I'll be gone now and try to get SOMETHING done from the list :-)

What have I been doing lately?

I just finished the "John Anderson's Kilt Hose" for my dad.

Another pair of socks I finished already a month ago, and sent to a swap pal - I hope they get to New Zealand SOON! I really hate the posting part of swaps... one never knows what happens. I forgot to write "New Zealand" on the package... DUH! This is the infamous "boring pair".

Then there are couple of doilies - or one doily and one chair set. I don't remember where I found the doily... I think it was called "little white doily", and it's a free pattern on-line somewhere.

And here's my two darlings :-) I don't think the "red eye removal" works too well, do you? Both my darlings have glowing eyes, which they do NOT have in reality LOL (And that's the chair this chair set is going to "protect"... It is true that my darling doesn't have that much hair and it's not oily either, but he likes pretty things and I like making pretty things ;-))
BTW, I have posted two of the missing four "Days of Christmas" dishcloth dechifferings. :-) Have fun :-)

  • Here are the last four days

But unfortunately only pictures. I've got flu - again - and I'm tired and my whole body aches, so I don't have the energy to write the patterns. Sorry about that, but you'll at least know that they exist. And some of you can read charts. I'll get back and transcribe them when I'm feeling better. Hopefully this week.

Edited 17th of January - only 11 days late ;-)
Here they all are deciphered and transcribed :-)

Edited 30th of July - half a year later - someone found errors, and I have been going through these... so far I have found three - line 16 and 36 on 3 hens and line 17 in Calling Birds

I was surfing and found this great Portuguese site (Could be Brazilian as well - any way, it's in Portuguese) "Arte em Tricot" and it had this blog entry about knitted pillows. I think these would look great as dishcloths or towels.

A little more help with Ulla knitting zine

    Edited March 14. 2007
I have been breaking the copyright law... the image belongs to Tikru, who's the mother of this pattern, and frankly, I have been translating enough of the pattern so that it can be seen as violation as well... *blush* For some reason I didn't think about it, and now I'm REALLY ASHAMED OF MYSELF.
Tikru contacted me, and she has been great about this all. If she did it because someone told her about this, thank you.

    -------------------------
    Ulla Finnish knitting zine

    Lanka - yarn
langan menekki - "consumption of yarn" - how much yarn is needed
    Neuletiheys - gauge
    Puikot - needles
    Koko - size
    Mallineule - swatch
    Ohje - pattern, instructions

    cm - centimeters
    s - stitch
    krs - row

    Ulla's English-Finnish wordlist

Let's look a little closet this pretty Green Day slipover

Yarn "Pirtin kehräämön karstalanka 140 tex 3, 200 g, väri kevät 726, liukuvärjätty vihreä"
"Pirtin kehräämö" is the yarn company, "karstalanka" is the harder kind of wool, "kampalanka" is softer. Finnish yarn is usually marked with "tex" number, which tells how much 1000 meters of yarn weights in grams. "140 tex 3" means that 1000 meters of the yarn weighs 140 grams and it's 3-plied.
You need 200 g of the yarn - about 1500 meters and one meter is about a yard.
Väri is color and "kevät 726" is the color name of this specific yarn (spring 726) and it's "liukuvärjätty vihreä" - dyed sliding green.

    the gauge is "16 s ja 18 krs sileää neuletta = 10 cm" - 16 stitches and 18 rows stockinette = 10 cm by 10 cm square.

    the needles are
*"Pyöröpuikot" - circular - "4,5 mm, 40 cm ja 80 cm tai käsialan mukaan"
That's pretty easy to understand. "ja" is and in Finnish.
"tai käsialan mukaan" or according your hand.
    * Apupuikko palmikoille - help needle for the cables

Size: M/L - medium or large
(jopa S-koko, koska selän joustinneule tekee koosta mukautuvan)
(even size Small, because the rib stitch of the back makes the size adjustable)

Vartalon ympärys: 98 cm, yhtään venyttämättä n. 80 cm
measurement around body - 98 cm, without stretching any about 80 cm
    Sivun pituus: 37 cm
    length of side
    Koko pituus: 55 cm
    whoe length

swatch: see the chart in the end of the page
Well, let's see the chart. Pretty easy to understand. A nine stitches braided cable, with two side stitches, every fourth row you twist the three stitches from outside in the middle, from every other side at every other time, and the picture is "oikean puolen palmikko" - right side cable.
As you can see on the picture, the cable braids are mirrored.

ENNEN KUIN ALOITAT (before you start)
Then the designer explains some things in Finnish, which are not necessary to know to knit the slipover. She says that you can knit it in round or flat, and she knitted it flat because she was thinking of adding buttons or zipper and making it a west instead.

HELMASTA KOHTI HARTIOITA (from bottom edge up towards the shoulders)

    Luo pitkälle pyöröpuikolle 134 s.
cast on on the long circular needle 134 stitches

    1 krs. - first row
(op) - right side, (np) - wrong side
    2o, 2n joustinneule - 2 knit, 2 purl rib
    3. row - "palmikonkierrot" - cable twist. As you can see on the pattern, the rib is cabled as well. It's an easy cable, you just switch the places of the knit stitches every fourth row. And as you can see, it's first stitch behind the work, knit the second stitch, knit the first stitch.
"toista kerroksia 1-4 vielä 4 kertaa"
repeat the rows 1-4 4 more times.
    "yhteensä palmikonkiertoja tehdään viisi"
All together there are five cable twists.
    Very understandable, no problems :-)

    VARTALO body

    "Isoista palmikoista yleisesti"
About the big cables in general
She explains what I just said above about the chart.

    Then the pattern begins.
    1. row (rs): knit
    2 k, 2 p, 9 k (right side front cable), 2 p, 11 k, 2 p, 9 k (right side side cable), 2 p, 3 k, *2p, 6k* (repeat *-* 6 times), 2 p, 3 k, 2 p, 9 k (left side side cable), 2 p, 11 k, 2 p, 9 k (left side front cable), 2 p, 2 k
    2. row (ws) and all the even rows: knit knits and purl purls
    3. row: start twisting cables according to the chart row 3

    "jatka" continue
    "jatka kunnes" continue until
You'll continue this way until there's 27 cm. Look at the picture. Nine cables.

There seem to be somekind of pattern knitted on the front stockinette in the picture, but that's not in the pattern.

    ETUKAPPALEEN PÄÄNTIE (front neckline)
I would say the wordlist I posted a couple of days ago is a very good help here. Now, check it out and then come back and ask if there are any problems.

    TAKAKAPPALE (back)

takakappaleen kädentiet ja pääntie - armholes and neck back

    ETUKAPPALE (front)

The short version is that you start making the decreases for neck in front, when you are up to armholes, you'll finish the backside, and then come back and finish the front, left (vasen) and right (oikea) side (puoli ;-)) mirroring each other (peilikuvaksi).

    VIIMEISTELY (finishing)

kolmen puikon päättely - three needle bind-off
    kädentiet - armholes
    you'll pick up 60 stitches and knit 4 rounds 2k, 2p rib.
päättele löysästi - bind off loosely
    pääntie - neck
pick up 108 and knit 8 rounds 2k, 2p rib
    HUOM! Note!
If you knit the slipover in round or have sewn it closed before you knit the neck, you'll need to pick up only 106 stitches.

Ompele etusauma tai tee nappilista tai ompele vetoketju paikalleen.
Sew the front seam or make a button band or sew the zipper on place

    Päättele langanpäät ja pingota kevyesti.
Weave in ends and block lightly.

    KAAVIOT (charts)

vasemman puolen palmikot - left side cable
oikean puolen palmikot - right side cable
kuvassa oikean puolen palmikkoa - in the picture right side cable
oikealla oikein, nurjalla nurin - on the right side knit, on the wrong side purl
oikealla nurin, nurjalla oikein - on the right side purl, on the wrong side knit
nosta 3 silmukkaa apupuikolle työn eteen - lift 3 stitches on the help needle in front of work
neulo 3 seuraavaa silmukkaa, neulo silmukat apupuikolta - knit the 3 following stitches, knit the stitches from the help needle
nosta 3 silmukkaa apupuikolle työn taakse - lift 3 stitches on the help needle in back of work

    Milking maiden

Edited 2nd of August: a lot of errors due to one, single counting error...
    lines 10-17, 20-22 and 48.
Edited 11th of September: lines 20-21 - 22 stitches instead of 20 as it was... Sorry about that.
Edited 26th April: lines 40-50 - looks right to me
I'm going to knit this and see if there are any more problems with this... *sigh*
2 hours later: I found the error :-) Round 49 - it was written
    " P8 P1 K24" when it - of course - should have been "P8 K1 P24"
